Supreme X Akira
One of the most hyped collaborations is going to be dropping tomorrow November 2nd. This is a collab that has been teased at for decades and has finally come to surface. This is the Supreme X Akira collaboration dropping tomorrow, Thursday November 2nd at Supreme's online store and retail stores.
For people who don't know what Akira is, it was a Japanese manga series created by Otomo that made its debut in 1982 and finished in 1990. This series was extremely popular because it showed a fictitious post-World War III where Tokyo is destroyed by a nuclear bomb. The premise of the show was the Tokyo is plagued with terrorism, drug use, and gruesome gang violence. The two main characters of this show we two best friends Kaneda and Tetsuo who were members of a motorcycle gang called The Capsules. These two characters, their motorcycle, their gang, and the social problem of drug abuse are key illustrations that are featured in this Supreme collaboration.
My favorite piece from this collaboration has to be the black and army Fishtail Parka. This item has Supreme embroidered on its left chest, Japanese characters on the back of the left wrist, and then a graphic of Kaneda with a quote bubble and a pill on his tongue which is on the middle back on the parka. This design is very simple and clean, which is why I think that it is so appealing. It can be worn with almost any other type of color or piece of clothing, which gives a lot of flexibility to wearers. The graphic that is on this item is also seen and put on many of the other items in this drop. It is apart of some hoodies, t-shirts, and work jacket.
What is so special about this collaboration is the pure simplicity of the graphics and the designs. All of the graphic from Akira that are on the clothing items are in pure black and white which makes them stand out against the high saturated color of the red, green, and blue material. To the streetwear subculture and Akira lovers, this is more than just a piece of clothing it is a piece of art, memories from their childhood or better times, or this flyest looking piece of clothing out there. That is the power Supreme has with the collaboration opportunities they are given.
